Our Community Interpreting Certificate Program was developed to enable participants to become competent community interpreters. The course introduces participants to the Interpreter’s Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice, delineates the interpreter’s role and skills, and provides training in professional terminology in both English and the target language.

This 8-week, 48-hour program prepares individuals to be professional oral interpreters and offers intensive instruction on topics such as immigration interpreting, DTA and DMA case studies, interpreting for the Department of Children and Families, and interpreting for DUA recipients.

Our program is conducted by a skilled Lead Trainer with many years of experience teaching a similar community-interpreting course at Boston University. Language coaching and role-play are led by professional interpreters who are native speakers of the target language.

Not every language is available during every course session. We require a minimum of five participants before offering the course in a specific language. Space in the program is limited, and applications are accepted on a rolling basis until the course is full.

Who Should Attend the Community Interpreter Training Course

Our classes are designed for bilingual individuals interested in becoming community interpreters, as well as for bilingual case managers and social workers. No previous interpreting background is required.

Entrance Prerequisites

• High school diploma or equivalency
• Oral proficiency in English and their target language
• Ability to read and write at an advanced level in their target language
• Successful completion of a language-assessment test
• Online pre-registration to reserve a seat in the course
• Submission of the Application and Registration Fee

Certificate of Completion

Upon successful completion of the Community Interpreter Training Program, you will receive a Certificate of Completion recognizing your competency as a professional interpreter. This document will certify that you have received 48 hours of training and passed a final written and oral exam.
