Linguistic Review of Online Massachusetts Driver’s Permit Tests
February 2017- Boston, MA – Language Connections, a Boston-based translation and interpreting agency, provides all types of professional translation services. Among the requests we receive from state and municipal institutions is to provide linguistic review for the translations of the driver’s permit test administered by the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (Mass RMV).
The Mass RMV has been working on translating the online driver’s permit tests into 28 languages in order to ensure better understanding for limited-English speaking test takers. Until now, the state only was able to offer English and Spanish tests online. Tests in other languages were only available on paper.
Linguistic Review For 3 Languages
Language Connections was asked to provide linguistic review and editing of driver’s permit tests translations to be used for online testing at Mass RMV service centers. The services included linguistic review of tests for Arabic, Russian, and Somali native speakers. Our role was to ensure that the vocabulary and terms used in the translated website versions were accurate for both the questions and answers in the test – ensuring optimal user experience. Differences in scripts also had to be accounted for, and special attention paid to how the translated texts aligned within the original format of the tests.
Linguistic Review & Editing Services
Linguistic review is a common editing method where a third party will look specifically at the syntax of the translated text (which differs from the more general editing process of proofreading). The purpose of this is to ensure the meaning and contextual use of words within the text is correct, along with the grammatical structure of the content.
