Conference Interpreting for the Medical Field
To provide the correct services for this conference, Language Connections needed to supply a pair of interpreters who were prepared to practice simultaneous interpretation and to offer portable interpreting equipment. The interpreters would not only be working during speeches, but also during tours, Q and A’s, and site visits. These situations called for portable equipment rather than a full booth. Language Connections also sought out interpreters who had a medical background, as the conference focused on the future of Medicine and Medical education. Having the right background allowed our interpreters to provide even more accurate, confident interpreter services.
Beyond these qualities, Language Connections made sure to provide interpreters who had real stamina. The conference went on for 3 full days, 8 hours each day. While this length would normally be challenging, the technical nature of the material made it even more so. It also entailed interpreting in different kinds of situations: site visits, tours, speeches, and Q and A’s. Each of these scenarios required a lot of energy, but adding them altogether certainly heightened the challenge. Between these two factors, Language Connections needed to pick the right interpreters to make sure this event went smoothly, from start to the finish!
The Result
Language Connections helped this University attract and retain a wider audience of participants by providing Mandarin interpreting. While bringing in people of other nationalities is always important, it was especially helpful in this case because of the differences between Eastern and Western medicine.
