Three Steps for Life Sciences Translation
For this project, Language Connections translated an eLearning and eTraining manual about eye surgery from English to Chinese. This ophthalmology manual contained highly technical and medical text. We completed this task with a three step process.
Our first step was finding a professional translator who was fluent in both English and Chinese, while also having a medical background. This combination of skills was important, as it allowed us to offer our client more accurate employee handbook translation services. Our second step was creating a glossary so all medical terms were accurate. To do this, we translated terms into Chinese in a glossary format, then had our translation approved by the client’s ophthalmology team in China. This part was highly important, as once it was done, we could refer back to a bank of important terms during the translation process.
The last step in our method was utilizing this glossary to translate the manual, chapter by chapter, from Chinese to English. The client’s ophthalmology team in China reviewed each translation as we completed a chapter, then gave feedback on each translation. We went back and forth until they felt satisfied with the final translation. After each chapter was completed, we used the feedback as additional guidance on translating the following chapters. This chapter by chapter approach was crucial to achieving the complete accuracy of the terms and phrases being translated in the manual. It also allowed us to continue to improve throughout the process.
