Azerbaijani breakfast is patented
Something funny has been cooking in the international patent sphere: Azerbaijan relatively recently obtained a patent for its national breakfast. By making it compulsory for hotels to serve the traditional breakfast, the country presumably hopes to promote the national cuisine especially as the European Games are about to be held in the capital in June. Why breakfast? Because according to Minister of Culture and Tourism Abulfas Garayev, “usually tourists have only breakfast in hotels and prefer to spend the rest of the time outside hotel territory.” Is this breakfast patent-worthy?

As outrageous as it may sound, the situation becomes more plausible when the facts are further analyzed. Azerbaijan’s traditional breakfast involves black tea, honey, yogurt, sheep-cheese, fried eggs with tomatoes, homemade jam, and bread. While this all sounds delicious, it also seems quite similar to a Turkish breakfast. Given this, patenting the physical breakfast itself could prove to be difficult; specifically, what was patented is the idea of the “Azerbaijan breakfast”. It seems that it will be used as a type of brand name. Furthermore, it seems to be a strategy that will facilitate the implementation of the enforced serving of Azerbaijani breakfasts at hotels.
Breakfast Patent | Patent or trademark?
For those of you thinking that this may actually be a trademark that was wrongly translated as “patent”, there is a small chance that you may be right. The sources found on the internet are either in English or at best in Russian, and since the actual patent in Azerbaijani cannot be found online and neither the Ministry of Culture and Tourism nor the state patent office have elaborated on the matter, it’s unfortunately impossible to prove this story 100%. Regardless, it’s worth thinking about the extent to which people will go to patent…well, anything.
