International Translation Day: A Tribute to Language Professionals

September 30th is International Translation Day, an annual celebration that pays tribute to the work of language professionals who provide translation services.

The Day for International Translation

The U.N. recognizes that the work of professional translation and localization services is vital in connecting nations together, facilitating dialogue, contributing to development, and fostering peace. Therefore, on May 24, 2017, the U.N. General Assembly passed resolution 71/288, declaring every September 30 to be celebrated as International Translation Day.

Each year, the International Federation of Translators (IFT) chooses a theme for celebrating International Translation Day. The topic for 2022 is A World without Barriers: The Role of Language Professionals in Building Culture, Understanding, and Lasting Peace.

FIT always makes an effort to promote language translation to the public and honors the work of translators and interpreting services. FIT writes: “The work of language professionals can often be undervalued and unseen, even though their contribution makes it possible for us to enjoy the benefits of scientific and technological progress, facilitates vital aid in conflict and disaster zones, and opens doors to new cultures.”

Why September 30th?

September 30th celebrates the feast of St. Jerome, a Christian scholar and priest. He was the first person to translate the Bible from Greek into Latin, making it available for the first time to a larger. He is also considered the patron saint of translators.

St. Jerome was a priest from northeastern Italy. He also translated parts of the Hebrew Gospel into Greek. His native language was thought to be Illyrian, an Indo-European language that no longer exists. He learned Latin in school and was fluent in Greek and Hebrew, which he picked up from his studies and travels. Jerome died near Bethlehem on September 30, 420, providing us with a date for International Translation Day.
