Education Translation Services from English to Spanish

One of our clients, an education company that sells resources and training, asked us to provide education translation services for resources for Spanish teachers.
Challenges in Education Translation Services
Language Connections’ Spanish translator had two major challenges in handling this project. The first was ensuring that her rendering stuck to a glossary provided by the client. This glossary gives a standardized list of Spanish words or phrases to be used for specific technical Education terms. By standardizing these terms, the language translator creates a work product that is clearer and easier to understand. Making sure this glossary is followed is a two-step process. Firstly, the translator uses the glossary as they translate the document, carefully utilizing the words in the list. The next step is for the Language Connections team to check over the translation. If there are any places where the glossary should have been used but was not, they have the translator make corrections. The process for this project was slightly more complicated than when we normally offer educational translation services, as the translator is usually free to use any words or phrases they think are best.
Beyond the glossary, the second challenge in this project was handling the Desktop Publishing element. The resources that Language Connections translated needed to be rendered in Spanish and in the same style and graphical design. When the client asks for Desktop publishing, as this one did, this requires placing the text in the right places. From English to Spanish, text expands about 20%. This meant that the Language Connections team needed to take the Spanish translation of the work, then carefully arrange it in a similar format to the English version—even though there was 20% more text. To achieve this, our Project Managers used InDesign to alter the look of the files. This kind of challenge certainly isn’t unique to educational translation services, though. Desktop Publishing can be requested by clients in any industry.
