Translating Inspiration In Over 20 Languages
Boston, MA – April 2017 – Language Connections had the unique opportunity to work with a graphic designer whose client, World Ambassadors, requested multilingual language translation services for inspiration cards. The translations included individual words into 22 languages, with the goal of creating a deck of cards entitled Living as a Global Leader Inspiration Cards.
World Ambassadors is a management consulting and training company with a focus on a holistic approach to increased employee productivity and improved overall company functioning. Their initial vision for this project was to use these cards in company employee training workshops and seminars.
What Are the Inspiration Cards?
The English text provided for translation consisted of a series of 45 individual words such as Peace, Courage, Partnership, Leadership, Tolerance and Commitment. The cards, elegantly designed with the peacock as a primary theme, will be used as a tool to help educate individuals on how to act as a global leader.
The Challenge of Translating Words Of Inspiration
Our senior project manager worked closely with the graphic designer that created these images, Michelle Manos (www.michellemanosdesign.com), as well as the company World Ambassadors, to ensure that the design and the translated text worked well within the boundaries of each card.Twenty-two languages form the back border of each card, with the English word featured in the center. Half of the languages that were selected for the multilingual language translation are those that are most spoken today, and the rest hold a place in world heritage.
The challenge with this creative business translation services project was to fit all 22 languages around the edges of each of the cards while taking into account scripts in the design and layout. This was especially important in maintaining the effect of the design. The actual translation of each of the words played a part in the overall effect of the cards as well – each word needed to have the same significance across all the languages, which can get tricky with 22 languages. Luckily we worked with a team of highly qualified translators, who were fluent not only in the target languages, but who were also able to take the meaning behind each English word included in the deck, and account for the necessary cultural and linguistic significance of each idea for the proper translation.
